What are ppl's thoughts on having a meeting every few weeks in the downtown area. Personally, I live downtown and its a 30 minute drive, through rush-hour, across town to get to the meetings now. If I didn't already have a car I probably wouldn't show up. I know at least a few JS devs that are in the same boat. Most ppl in my area are used to walking everywhere, and they'd be more likely to show up if some of the meetups were within walking distance.
I realize moving some of the meetings over here, across town, will require a few things. Finding a place to meet is obviously the first challenge. After doing some research, there are definitely a few options.
The library: It's free, just takes a reservation. Don't know how good the wireless is tho.
The Thomas Center: An old mansion thats owned by the city. It's a few dollars an hour for a meeting space that comes with a projector. Wireless is unknown.
The Santa Fe CIED: A small campus on 6th and University that has several meeting places. Comes with wireless.
- The Hackerspace: A basement under the Sun Center that is large enough for our group. Don't know who to contact to get more info tho.
Thats a few. There are also several bars that have space and would be happy to schedule time for us to meet. I'm thinking of The Bull, and The Midnight. Also First Magnitude is down here as well. Might be a decent place to meet, they definitely have the space.
I'd love to know ppl's thoughts. Any suggestions or things I'm not thinking about would be great too.
Yo @likethemammal, thanks for getting this conversation started. I think it's a great idea.
A few other Meetups (Frontend Awesome and WordPress) are held at the CIED and it's been very comfortable. I'll check with those guys and see if there is any available time slots.
As for the others, The Thomas Center could be really cool as well. Does anyone have experience with events there? Might be worth checking out as well. I've never been to Hackerspace but I might know one of the organizers, if we think that might be a viable option I can try and get ahold of them.
A bar alternative or less formal meetup has always sounded like fun to me. I think we talked at one point about having happy hour get togethers or something. Anyone else into that idea?
Thanks for the response!
For Hackerspace, I've been told that Christian, from Paracosm would be the person to talk to about setting something up there. The CEID would also be a great option (tho personally, I'd prefer a place with less fluorescent lighting). For bars/breweries, First Magnitude is high on my list. Lots of space and a nice environment. There's few things I love more than speaking in front of crowds with alcohol in hand.
I can try reaching out to Christian. I'll post when I hear back from him.
As we talked about at the last meetup I've tried working with some businesses downtown to host one of the events. The reason I like the idea of partnering with businesses down there is that it is a great way to network and get visibility into those organizations. Personally I'd like to stay away from the CEID. I agree on the lighting and it just feels cold. I'd love to get into a space like Hackerspace or StarterSpace.
We've also talked to MIke who runs FrontEnd Meetup about joining our meetups for a Happy Hour downtown somewhere. I think something like First Magnitude or The Midnight would be great for something like that.
I asked Christian Kleist about using the Hackerspace once a month. Here's his response so far:
Hell yes. We can definitely make that happen. A big part of Hackerspace’s mission is giving space to technical meetups.
What schedule did you have in mind?
I was thinking we meet on every two weeks at alternating locations. First week of the month at 352 and 3rd week of the month downtown at the Hackerspace? Thoughts?
Also, would 7pm still work for everyone? I know the commute might make it tough. Us downtown ppl are used to staying up late, so another time later on would work for me :]
Nice, @likethemammal-- Thanks dude!
Hackerspace sounds like an awesome venue. Personally speaking I've probably only got schedule for one meetup a month but I'm really behind getting more downtowners involved.
The next Thursday in the cycle is actually next Thursday, do you think that's too soon to get on the books for Hackerspace?
Also, how do you feel about doing a React talk or something?
Next week I'm meeting with Christian to walk through the Hackerspace and get acquainted with the ppl over there, so I think next Thursday would be a little soon.
As far as a React talk, yes! I'm very interested in doing one. I know that the NodeSchools talk continues next meeting tho.
I've also been asked to do lightning talks on a few projects I'm working on, and I'd be glad to do those whenever.
Sounds awesome on all fronts! Let me know how the talk with Christian goes.
This Thurs will just be a general purpose happy hour meetup... We'll continue the NodeSchool saga at a later time though for sure.
I'd like to get a good dialog started in terms of what everyone wants to get from the meetup so hopefully having some more casual get togethers will aide in that.
As for the first downtown meetup, I'd love to have a React talk-- that should be an exciting one.
So update on this.
Met with Christian at Hackerspace this morning. Walked through the space with him, went over some setup details, and talked about resources available. There is WiFi, a projector, chairs, table, and even food and drinks. This space'll be perfect.
The less exciting news. As I've discussed with a few of you yesterday at the last JS meetup, there is few conflicts with the Downtown "chapter" meeting the 3rd Thursday of every month. The front-end meetup apparently meets that night each month as well. And this month, 352 is doing a retreat thing in Tampa, so that night (the 20th) is especially bad.
What I proposed to Christian today is that we would meet the 2nd Thursday of the month, so the 13th this month (since Thursdays are apparently the best days to talk dev stuff). He says that works. He's also open to other days of the month, except Tuesdays. Since it'd be the 2nd Thursday, that would mean we'd have both meetups within a week of each other. IDK if this is a good thing or not.
I'd love to hear others thoughts. Otherwise, he's fine with the 13th and every 2nd Thursday of the month. @aaron and @EranSch, I know this might be sooner than you expected. Do you guys think a week from yesterday is enough time for ppl's schedules?
